Our body is amazing creation ... but have you ever stopped and wondered what happens going to happen as you get older?

We all get older, you know.  How much better to be prepared, to know the facts and to be able to prevent some illness .....especially when it comes to

"Facing the Issues of Osteoporosis"

Dear friend:

Osteoporosis is a common disease that causes bones to become brittle and more likely to break. These fractures can occur anywhere in the body, but occur more often in the hip, spine and wrist.  According to the National Institutes of Health, 8 million women and 2 million men suffer from osteoporosis in the USA

Osteoporosis is a major public health issue which afflicts 55% of Americans aged 50 and above.  Of these, approximately 80% are women.[78]  It is estimated that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 12 men over the age of 50 worldwide have osteoporosis.

'Osteo' has been responsible for millions of fractures annually, mostly involving the lumbar vertebrae, hip and wrist.  These 'fragility fractures' are also common in men over 60, mainly in the ribs.

Half of all women and one-third of men over 60 in Australia will have a fracture due to osteoporosis.  Every 5-6 minutes, someone is admitted to an Australian hospital with an osteoporotic fracture.  This is expected to rise to every 3 - 4 minutes by the year 2021, as the population ages and the number of osteoporotic fractures will increase.

Other countries have similar stats, if not higher in some cultures than others.  WHY?

Osteoporosis, like so many other diseases, is an adaptive response to the poor physical conditions in which you have allowed your body to exist.  Your body is created as an intelligent organism that learns from experience and adapts to demands.  It gets better at doing whatever you regularly ask it to do.

Osteoporosis basically occurs when bones lose their density and strength, either from sedimentary living, harmful lifestyles, wrong diet, too little sunshine or exercise and lack of healthy mindsets.

The bottom line?  This disorder of the skeleton weakens the bones and results in frequent fractures in the bones. However we don't have to 'endure it' because we all are getting older.  There are ways to help ourselves NOW!

Well, you may ask........

Isn't Osteo just a consequence of getting old?

In studying this complex disease, researchers have found that bone is not a hard and lifeless structure.  It is a actually a complex, living tissue that completely regenerates about every eight years.  Certain cells repair bone and draw calcium from the blood for deposit into bone tissue.  Other cells are designed to break down old bone tissue.  Because bones are constantly changing, they can heal and are profoundly affected by diet and exercise

medications.jpg Millions of people are seeking such medications to manage this illness.  We all want the "instant cure" that can only come from a pill ...... or are there better ways?

Clearly, current medical protocols are losing the war against disease. Rather than covering-up the diseases by taking prescription drugs, we should be striving to attain true health.  We need to work with the inbuilt, God-given balances to be successful.

That's where "Facing the Issues of Osteoporosis" is so important!

Hey!  You may be in the stats about Osteo already if:

**** Family history - having a first-degree relative with osteoporosis or osteopenia, a condition where bone mineral density is lower than normal, increases the risk of osteoporosis.
**** Ethic group
- some studies show that Caucasian people and people of Asian descent have a higher rate of osteoporosis.
**** Small body frame
- women and men who have small body frames or who have a body mass index of 19 or less, have a higher risk of osteoporosis, possibly because they have less bone mass to begin with.
**** Thyroid disease
- too much thyroid hormone, either from hyperthyroidism or long term use of supplements to treat hypothyroidism, can cause bone loss and increase the risk of osteoporosis.
**** Medical conditions
- certain medical conditions and diseases including inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease and gastric band surgery, can interfere with the body's natural ability to absorb and properly utilize calcium.

The good news is that there are ways to lower the risk of osteoporosis!

"Keep fit and exercise, eat healthy, give up smoking, make sure that you have an adequate intake of vitamin D and calcium and educate yourself about osteoporosis and how to assess your risk with the help of doctors" says Dr. Manolagas, a prominent researcherr and leading physician in the area of Osteoporosis.
